"With reference to the third paragraph of your letter relating to the question of the cost of the prisoner's removal, Sir Matthew Ridley would refer M. Chamberlain to section 11 of the Colonial Prisoners Removal Act, and to the Home Office letter of the 21st April, 1896, which was written in reply to your letter of the 21st February, 1896, (No. 2871) with regard to the cases of Martin Crowley and J. Turner who were removed from Malta and Cyprus respectively. If the cost of Mrs Carew's removal and maintenance in England is to be borne by Imperial Funds, it will be necessary for the Colonial Office to obtain the consent of the Treasury.
